Museum Visit : Oct 28th : Wack! Art and the feminist revolution
This exhibition was very different from some of the other exhibitions I have been to. It was not just about the
art exhibits by themselves, as in it was not like you view them, take them in, admire , hate or feel whatever it is that you feel
after seeing them. It was more about interpretation, understanding, history, the social context and as such very
intellectually stimulating.
Some of the work illustrated that women were now beginning to look more into their own selves and bodies and expressing
their feminity.
At a time women did not have a place, visibility or respect in the Art world, they protested by using
the media for mundane "craft" work that they were involved in, to create works of art.
They were bringing out in the open
the hidden "porn" world into the museums for everyone to see what was goin on in the "play boy" world and what
every one was raving over secretly.
It also had the hints of the lesbian movement through the art work
The subjects were mostly about the women's world, children, repression, sex, the time spent waiting for things to happen etc
There was also the subject of subtle racism within the female artists
In summary the exhibition essentially depicted the feminist movement and the social change
that was occuring during 60's, 70's and 80's
